| These lanterns are splendid examples of the
highly burnished black-ware made by the Zapotec potters of San Bartolo Coyotepec,
Oaxáca. The black color is achieved through reduction-firing, a technique
in which carbon residue is bonded to clay in an airtight two-level kiln.
The high luster is produced by hand rubbing with well-worn river stones
after firing. The lanterns' tiny openings produce a soft glow and a patterned reflection when lit from within by a votive candle or tea light. These lanterns come in a range of styles and shapes. Those pictured are 6 in. & 8 in. high. Round and elliptical lanterns are also available. Patterns and sizes vary. Contact us for more information. Photos available on request. |
