On January 24, The Marengo Collection celebrates its grand re-opening from 1 - 5 P.M. with the works of FRANCISCO ONATE: Painter & Printmaker from Morelia, Michoacan.

FRANCISCO ONATE is a keen observer of indigenous ceremonies and celebrations, and lovingly translates his appreciation of ancient culture into the paintings and graphic works on view at The Marengo Collection.

Many of his works are based on The Days of the Dead, Easter and ritual dance festivals. In his comments about his work, he writes that this rich regional culture is like a never-ending fountain for his work.Ý
He states, "My characters are the people who work the land, but at the same time in their festive costumes, they represent the legacy and conservation of profound and colorful traditions."

Onate was born in 1940 and studied at the Universidad Michoacana in his hometown of Morelia from 1959 to 1965 with famed artists Alfredo Zalce, Roberto Martinez and Javier Arevalo. He has had exhibitions in his native Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, and the United States. His teaching and lecturing experiences have been in printmaking and painting. He has worked as coordinator of various museums and cultural centers in Michoacan, and in the Bay area of California.
