From August 27 - September 24, 2005, The Folk Tree is pleased to present an exhibition in
collaboration with Otis College of Art and Design. LATIN AMERICAN INSPIRATION:
Otis Alumni Exhibit at The Folk Tree includes the work of thirty-six artists who attended a
degree program at Otis and whose pieces are influenced by Latin American art. A reception for the artists is scheduled for Saturday, August 27, from 2 - 6 P.M.
This juried show was selected by Folk Tree owner Rocky Behr, Folk Tree Gallery Director Kathi Oshima, herself an Otis alumnus, and Folk Tree Collection Gallery Director Gail Mishkin. The goal of the jurors was to put together an exhibition that reflected Latin American art influences and was indicative of the variety of Otis' programs. Approximately sixty pieces are on view, including sculpture, photography, ceramics, digital imagery, painting, illustration, mixed media, and drawing.
The artists represented span several decades of Otis programs. Armando
Baeza, who last attended Otis in 1949, shows two figurative bronzes.
Brian Medina, who graduated in 2003, exhibits an oil painting entitled
"Window to the History of Mexico." And, there are artists
in the show from every decade in between - among them Martha Menke
Underwood (1958, watercolor); Ernest Lacy (1960, oil); Arturo de la
Fuente (1979, ceramics and digital prints with aquatint); Diane Holland
(1984, mixed media digital); and, Yelena Chemerisov (1996, oil).
Many of these Otis attendees have gone on to fine art, illustration, teaching, animation and other careers in the arts, receiving awards and showing their work both locally and nationally. The Folk Tree is pleased to acknowledge the accomplishments of Otis' talented and diverse student body in this exhibition.
