From July 17 - August 14, The Folk Tree Collection is pleased to present the mixed media pieces of native Los Angeles artist Robert Quijada in an exhibition celebrating world cultures. Quijada shows his most recent series of eighteen gouaches and colored pencil works on paper inspired by years of travel as well as his background in textile design. An opening reception for the exhibition is scheduled for Saturday, July 17,
from 2 - 6 P.M.

The images on view are all approximately 20" x 15." They are intricately patterned with a vibrant palette. The subjects include still lives reflecting Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, and African motifs, among others, as well as vignettes capturing elements of life from the Caribbean, tropical rain forests and elsewhere around the globe. Incorporated into each image is an elaborate painted frame. Quijada has lived in Spain, London, New York, and Santa Fe and has traveled to South and Central America, Mexico, and Asia, constantly enriching the vocabulary of his art through these experiences.

Each piece is done with a precision that borders on the obsessive, and the artist typically spends a minimum of thirty-five hours painting before he deems a work complete. He uses photographs and slides from his travels, reference materials, actual objects and his own vivid imagination to compose every work.

Robert Quijada studied at Otis Art Institute and Chouinard Art Institute. He then pursued careers in both commercial and fine art, applying his talent in the former to textile design and his passion for the latter to painting and mixed media work which emphasized pattern, texture and detailed composition.

He says of the series in this exhibition, "In all my years as an artist, I see this current work as the highest point in my expression and creativity. I've combined the decorative and figurative elements of textile design and the fundamentals of fine art. I see this as illustrated folk art."
